Hyundai Palisade: What Does Palisade Mean?

Think about all your favorite car names, are there any that confuse you or make you wonder “what does that actually mean?” Hyundai has a tendency to pick vehicle names that either sound fantastical (Elantra, Veloster) or are names of places (Tucson, Santa Fe). The fantastical names are meant to give the models a level of intrigue. So what does the name “Palisade” mean? Continue reading to find out.

Where Does the Name “Palisade” Come From?

The name of the Korean automaker’s biggest SUV comes from history. The word isn’t Korean, it’s an English word used to describe a protective wall or fence made of wood or metal stakes, rods, or planks and mounted vertically in the ground. It started with the Latin word “Palus” (which means stake) which eventually changed to “Palissa,” then “Palissade,” then the modern Palisade. Today it can refer to a Los Angeles community or a line of cliffs, especially the high basalt cliffs west of the Hudson River near New York and New Jersey.

Why Choose the Name Palisade for the SUV?

Hyundai gave the answer that the Palisade is named after a neighborhood in Los Angeles, which probably makes a lot more sense to people living on the West Coast than around here.

Safety

Since Palisade refers to a defensive or protective structure, it should help call to mind that the vehicle is built with a comprehensive list of available safety features.

Luxury

The Pacific Palisades is an affluent neighborhood by the Pacific Ocean, so the name can also be used to describe the luxury features available on the model.

Seating

One last reason the vehicle was named for the Pacific Palisades neighborhood relates to the vehicle’s passenger seating capabilities. Just like how the residential area is part of one of the most populous cities in the country, the Hyundai Palisade can hold more passengers than any other Hyundai SUV.
